Alan Swanstrom Alan F. Swanstrom

Al grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in a strong, middle-class family. He met his wife Pam while attending graduate school at the University of Minnesota. Al has had the good fortune of being happily married for over 32 years. Pam is an information technology consultant and is an active participant in many community and charitable organizations.

Both of Al's children attended Wake County schools and went on to colleges in North Carolina. His daughter, Jessica, graduated from Peace College with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, and his son, Geoff, graduated with honors from North Carolina State University and his Masters degrees in International Relations and Climate Science at Georgia Tech University.

Before retiring in 2006, Al spent 30 years working for IBM in a broad spectrum of management and executive positions in sales, sales management, product development, market management, finance and administration, business strategy, and international standards.

Much of his career at IBM was focused on creating technology solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of state and local governments. Al has had the opportunity to travel to all 50 states and most major international cities. He has seen first-hand the impacts of globalization, and knows how important it is that our children have the skills they will need to compete in a global marketplace. He understands the necessity for responsible government to maintain a high quality of life for its citizens.

Al enjoys working with others to improve our community. He serves on the Wake County Planning Board, the Town of Cary Planning and Zoning Board , the NC Conservation Council Board, and he has been a longtime board member, public policy advocate, and program ambassador of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Pam and Al have been active supporters of the Frankie Lemmon School for developmentally challenged children as volunteers, fund raisers, and program steering committee members. His entire family has been involved with the Helping Hand Mission, and he has also given back to our community as a youth minister at St. Andrews Church.

In his spare time, Al loves restoring classic cars, wood working, cycling, sailing, and traveling.
